The Reality of Student Life: Beyond the Illusion of Ease
If you ever receive low marks, do not lose hope. As you move forward in life, those numbers will fade from memory. What will remain are the friendships you built, the teachers who guided you, and the experiences that shaped you.
Jhapa: Being a student is often perceived as a simple and carefree phase of life attending school, completing homework, and enjoying youthful freedom. However, the reality is far more complex. Student life today is filled with pressure, stress, and constant challenges that are rarely acknowledged or openly discussed. At times, it feels as though the harder one tries, the heavier the burden becomes.
Have you ever noticed how, as a child, a student would eagerly share every thought and secret with their parents? Over time, that openness often fades. Gradually, communication becomes limited, and although the child is physically present at home, there is an emotional distance that grows unnoticed. This transformation does not happen without reason.
In childhood, life resembles that of a free bird playing with friends, exploring the world, and living without worry. But as students grow older, their routines become increasingly demanding. School hours are followed by coaching classes, assignments, and endless preparation for examinations. The cycle repeats daily, leaving little to no time to simply be a child. It begins to feel like an endless race assignment after assignment, exam after exam with no finish line in sight.
Despite this reality, many still claim that student life is easy. One may wonder how such a conclusion is even possible. Student life is a phase filled with emotional and mental strain. There is pressure from multiple directions and expectations from parents, teachers, and society; the fear of academic performance; comparisons with peers and relatives; and the uncertainty of future success. Students are constantly expected to achieve more, perform better, and prove their worth.
In truth, students are warriors. Every single student faces these pressures in their own way and continues to move forward despite the challenges. Some students endure even greater difficulties, lacking access to quality education, expensive resources, or supportive environments. Yet, they persist.
It is important to recognize that student life is not easy—it is demanding, transformative, and often overwhelming. Acknowledging this reality is the first step toward understanding and supporting students better.
My Message to My Schoolfellows
If you ever receive low marks, do not lose hope. As you move forward in life, those numbers will fade from memory. What will remain are the friendships you built, the teachers who guided you, and the experiences that shaped you.
Do not allow stress and pressure to consume your happiness. Live your life fully, embrace each moment, and take care of your well-being. One day, when you look back, you will realize that these were your golden days, not because they were easy, but because they made you stronger.
Have a wonderful time.
